The renowned composer Ennio Morricone composed many of the world’s most famous soundtracks. Beginning in the early 1960s Morricone contributed music to more than 500 films. His filmography includes Sergio Leone’s famous Italian western „Dollar Trilogy“ of the 1960s („A Fistful of Dollars“, „For a Few Dollars More“, „The Good, the Bad and the Ugly“) and Sergio Leone’s „Once Upon a Time Trilogy“ („Once Upon a Time in the West“, „Once Upon a Time in… the Revolution/A Fistful of Dynamite“, „Once Upon a Time in America“) as well as several soundtracks to films of Giuseppe Tornatore („Cinema Paradiso“, „The Legend of 1900“, „Malena“). He also worked for directors such as Sergio Corbucci, Duccio Tessari, Sergio Sollima, John Carpenter, Bernardo Bertolucci, Mauro Bolognini, Giuliano Montaldo, Roland Joffé, Roman Polanski and Henri Verneuil. In 2007, he received the Academy Honorary Award „for his magnificent and multifaceted contributions to the art of film music.“ In 2016, Morricone received his first Academy Award for his score to Quentin Tarantino’s film „The Hateful Eight“. His other achievements include three Grammy Awards, three Golden Globes, six BAFTAs, ten David di Donatello, eleven Nastro d’Argento, two European Film Awards, the Golden Lion Honorary Award and the Polar Music Prize in 2010.

Sounds from the Ancestors, is a multi-faceted album. The music, however, doesn’t lodge inside the tight confines of the jazz idiom, which is not surprising considering the alto saxophonist and composer acknowledges the likes of Aretha Franklin and Marvin Gaye as significant touchstones. Similar to how Miles Davis’ seminal LP, On the Corner, subverted its main guiding lights – James Brown, Jimi Hendrix and Sly Stone – then crafted its own unique, polyrhythmic, groove-laden, improv-heavy universe, Sounds from the Ancestors occupies its own space with intellectual clarity, sonic ingenuity and emotional heft. “The concept initially was about trying to get some of the musical sounds that I remembered as a kid growing up – sounds that lift your spirit from people like John Coltrane, ‘A Love Supreme’; Aretha Franklin, ‘Amazing Grace’; Marvin Gaye, ‘What’s Going On’; and the spiritual side of the church,” Garrett explains. “When I started to think about them, I realized it was the spirit from my ancestors.” Indeed, Sounds from the Ancestors reflects the rich jazz, R&B, and gospel history of his hometown of Detroit. More important though, it also reverberates with a modern cosmopolitan vibrancy – notably the inclusion of music coming out of France, Cuba, Nigeria and Guadeloupe.

Founded by Edgar Froese in 1967, Tangerine Dream were formative in the genre of electronic music, with long instrumental tracks based on synthesizer and sequencer sounds, later known as ‚Berlin School‘ and ‚Kosmische Musik‘. Their groundbreaking record Phaedra, released in 1974, reacheded gold status in the UK, and it was also the band’s first hit album on the Virgin Records label to whom they had recently signed. The recording became a milestone in electronic music. Over the last 50 years, the band has released more than 100 studio albums, created over 60 film scores, and were nominated for a Grammy seven times. The group’s line-up changed many times over the years, with Edgar Froese remaining as the only constant member. After Edgar Froese’s death in 2015, Tangerine Dream’s line-up now consists of Thorsten Quaeschning, Hoshiko Yamane, and Paul Frick. The subsequent albums Quantum Gate and Raum are based on Edgar Froese’s musical sketches and ideas.

Bianca Gismonti’s entire art was naturally born out of the affective bonds she ́s weaved throughout her life. As a due heiress of her father ́s musicality – the great composer, pianist and guitarist Egberto Gismonti – she started, at the ripe age of 15, to accompany him on tour around the world. During her musical college years, she befriended Claudia Castelo Branco, another young pianist, with whom would co-found “Duo Gisbranco” – growing into a successful eleven year career comprising of three albums, one DVD and extensive world-wide touring. Yet, the encounter with drummer/percussionist Julio Falavigna was bound to happen. Based on Bianca’s new compositions, they’ve taken their personal union over to the musical field, together conceiving and producing “Sonhos de Nascimento” (Dreams of Birth). Furthermore, from 2013 to 2014, they’d consolidate a trio format alongside bassist Antonio Porto, thus realizing a common sonic identification, touring South America (Brasil, Argentina, Uruguay), Europe (England, Austria, Spain and Portugal) as well as Japan (at the prestigious Cotton Club venue).

Traveling from explorations towards solutions, the larve-like sleep of “Dreams of Birth” (“Sonhos de Nascimento”) blossoms unto the butterfly-ish free flight of “First Sky” (“Primeiro céu”), her second album released in 2015. This record had special apeearances by singer Jane Duboc and harmonica player José Staneck. In 2016, the same album was released by Impartment Records (Japan) and Quinton Records (Austria), allowing for a new round of tours over Europe, Africa and Asia, during which her new album which is to be released in 2018 – “Unveiling Seas” was recorded in Budapest, under Hunnia Records. All throughout, besides her own compositions, her fathers’repertoire remained part and parcel of her soul, being somewhat always present during the performances. In this year, celebrating Egberto’s 70th Birthday, Bianca decided to put together a full set-list in his honour, with many of the compositions which became hallmarks of his career. Classics such as “Palhaço”, “Lôro”, “Água e Vinho” and “Maracatu” are in this new show which has been captivating audiences worldwide in 2018 as well as a homonymous CD to be released by Hunnia Records in 2019.
